Garaywa averages over 9,000 guests attending meetings and conferences throughout the year.

Only a few minutes from Jackson and in the city limits of Clinton, Garaywa is truly a retreat in the middle of the suburbs.

In 1947, the very first summer camp was held at Garaywa. It was started by Edwina Robinson, the Executive-Director of Mississippi’s WMU.

In 1949, the summer camping program was shortened from 14 weeks of camp only 7 weeks because of the Polio epidemic. There were 1,163 in attendance.

A fire ravaged camp in September of 1970, destroying two of the main buildings of Garaywa. In 1971 summer camp proceeded thanks to the fast construction on the two main buildings.

In April 1999, the new adult lodge, Patterson Place, was completed. The lodge was named for Marjean Patterson and her dedicated service to Mississippi WMU.

Garaywa is an acrostic for GAs, RAs, and YWAs (Girls in Action, Royal Ambassadors, and Young Woman’s Auxilary).
